Gutters only work when water can get through them. Once leaves, moss, grit and the odd tennis ball settle in the bottom, rain backs up, spills over the front or the back, and ends up on walls, windows and foundations instead of in the drain. A blocked gutter rarely looks like much from the ground, which is why the damage often shows up first as a stained soffit or a soft fascia board.

Our gutter cleaning is a proper clear-out, not a quick scoop from a ladder. We clear the gutters and roof valleys by hand, unblock and flush the downpipes, check the outlets and joints, and send you before and after photos. If the spouting itself is failing, we tell you, but cleaning and replacement are separate jobs and we only quote new spouting when it is genuinely needed.

Pricing: every roof gets a free on-site measure and an itemised written quote, with a fixed price agreed before any work starts.

Gutters rusted, sagging or leaking at the joins? Replacement is covered under spouting and gutters.

Signs your gutters need clearing

You do not need to climb up to spot most gutter problems. Look out for:

  • Water pouring over the front edge of the gutter in steady rain
  • Plants, grass or moss growing out of the spouting
  • Gutters sagging between brackets under the weight of wet debris
  • Downpipes that stay dry during rain, or gurgle and spit at the top
  • Dark streaks or staining on the fascia, soffit or cladding below the gutter
  • Puddling or soil washing out along the base of the walls

What a gutter clean includes

We remove debris by hand along every run, bag it and take it away, rather than blasting it across your roof, windows and garden. Roof valleys and the areas behind chimneys and skylights are cleared at the same time, because debris there washes straight back into the gutters. Each downpipe is then flushed with water to confirm it runs freely, and any blockage is cleared from the top or through the rainhead.

While we are up there we look at the condition of the spouting: joints that weep, brackets that have pulled loose, sections that hold water because the fall is wrong, and rust on older steel. You get photos of anything worth knowing about. If we find loose or damaged roofing, flashings or tiles near the gutter line, we photograph that too and our roof repairs team can quote it separately.

Working safely at height

Gutter cleaning is work at height, and a fall from a single storey roof edge can cause serious injury. WorkSafe New Zealand expects anyone working at height to plan the job and manage the risk of a fall, using the safest practical method, and its guidance for roof work prefers edge protection or scaffolding over relying on a harness. Ladders are suited to short, light tasks with the ladder set up and secured properly.

Every job starts with a look at the site. On a low, single storey house with good ground around it, well-set ladders and roof anchors are usually enough. Two-storey homes, steep roofs and difficult sections can need a mobile platform or edge protection. If the roof is fragile, such as old fibre cement sheet, we work from below or from a platform and never walk on it. That planning is part of the price, and it is why we will not cut corners to quote lower.

Leaves, trees and the best time to clean

The trees around your house decide how often your gutters need clearing. Streets lined with mature deciduous trees, such as the London planes among Beckenham's mature street trees, drop a heavy load of leaves in autumn, and those leaves pack into gutters and downpipe heads quickly. Homes near large trees in Riccarton, close to Riccarton Bush and Hagley Park, can collect twigs and leaf litter through the year.

For most Christchurch homes, a clean after the autumn leaf fall and before winter makes the most sense. Christchurch averages around 80 ground frosts a year, and water that sits in a blocked gutter or a choked downpipe can freeze overnight, adding weight to the spouting and stressing the joints. Clearing the gutters before the cold sets in lets winter rain drain away instead. Homes under big trees may need a second clean in spring, and leaf guards can stretch the time between visits.

Overflow, fascia rot and downpipes

When a gutter overflows at the back rather than the front, water runs down behind the spouting onto the fascia board and into the soffit. Painted timber fascia will cope with the odd splash, but repeated soaking rots it from the back, where you cannot see it until the brackets start to let go. Overflow at the front lands against the cladding and the base of the walls, and over time that water can find its way under floors.

Downpipes carry everything the gutters collect down to a stormwater connection, a rain tank or a soak pit. A blocked downpipe turns its whole section of gutter into a holding tank. Christchurch City Council runs the public stormwater network in the city, with Selwyn District Council and Waimakariri District Council covering their own towns, but the gutters and downpipes on your house are yours to keep clear. If cleaning shows the fascia is already soft or the downpipes are split or undersized, our downpipes and fascia service covers the repair.

Cleaning or new spouting, and what affects the cost

Gutter cleaning keeps sound spouting working. It will not fix spouting that has rusted through, lost its fall or been pulled off its brackets, and no amount of clearing will make an undersized gutter carry more water. If yours has reached that point, we say so plainly and show you the photos. Spouting replacement is a separate quote, and plenty of homes only ever need regular cleaning.

Gutter cleaning is priced on the length of spouting, the height of the house and the access. The amount of debris, the number of downpipes, whether valleys and the roof need clearing too, and whether you want leaf guards fitted all affect the quote. If the roof itself is covered in moss and debris, our roof cleaning service can be done on the same visit, which saves a second setup.

Gutter Cleaning FAQs

How often should gutters be cleaned in Christchurch?

Most homes are well served by a clean after the autumn leaf fall and before winter. Homes under large trees may need a second clean in spring.

Can blocked gutters cause damage inside?

Yes. Overflow behind the spouting can rot the fascia and soak the soffit, and overflow against the walls can reach the cladding, framing and subfloor over time.

Do you clean the downpipes as well?

Yes. Every downpipe is flushed to make sure it runs freely, and any blockage is cleared as part of the job.

Is gutter cleaning the same as replacing spouting?

No. Cleaning keeps sound spouting working. If your spouting is rusted, sagging or undersized, we tell you and quote replacement separately.

Can frost damage my gutters?

Water left sitting in a blocked gutter or downpipe can freeze on cold nights, adding weight and stressing the joints. Clear gutters drain before that happens.

Are leaf guards worth it?

They reduce how much debris gets in and can stretch the time between cleans, especially under trees. They do not remove the need for occasional checks.
