Christchurch is one of the drier cities in New Zealand, with around 618 mm of rain a year at the airport, so it is easy to assume spouting has an easy life here. It does not. Spouting is sized for the short, heavy bursts that come with a southerly change, not the yearly total, and it also has to survive storm-force nor'westers, leaf fall from mature trees, frosty nights and, near the coast, salt spray.
We replace and repair spouting on homes across Christchurch, from bungalows in Papanui and Spreydon to rebuilt homes in the east and new builds in Halswell, Rolleston and Rangiora. Most re-roofs include new spouting, and our downpipes and fascia page covers the parts that sit alongside it.
Pricing: every roof gets a free on-site measure and an itemised written quote, with a fixed price agreed before any work starts.
Trouble with the boards behind the spouting or the pipes that carry the water away? See downpipes and fascia.
Gutters in good condition but full of leaves? Clearing them is covered under gutter cleaning.

Signs your spouting needs replacing
Small leaks at joints can be repaired, but some problems mean the spouting has reached the end of its life or was never right for the roof:
- Rust holes or flaking paint along the gutter base, especially on older steel
- Sagging runs where water sits instead of draining to the outlet
- Joints that keep leaking after being resealed
- Brackets pulled loose or bent after a nor'wester
- Overflow in heavy rain even when the gutters are clean
- Cracked or brittle PVC, often on the sunniest faces of the house
- Water staining or rot on the fascia behind the spouting
Sizing spouting for Christchurch rain
Gutter capacity is a calculation, not a guess. Under the Building Code's surface water clause, external gutters are sized using the rainfall intensity of a short, heavy storm at the site, the area of roof draining to each length of gutter, and the number and position of downpipes. BRANZ recommends using the actual sloping roof area rather than the flat plan area, because a steeper roof catches more wind-driven rain.
Low annual rainfall does not mean low peak rainfall. Canterbury had its wettest July on record in 2017, when the Avon and Heathcote rivers overflowed, and a gutter that copes with a typical shower can still overflow in a downpour like that. A large or steep roof draining to a single downpipe often needs a bigger profile, an extra downpipe or both. When we quote, we measure each roof plane and check the layout can carry the water rather than copying what was there before.
How It Works
Wind, frost, leaves and salt
Te Ara describes the nor'wester as a hot, dry wind that can reach storm force and cause widespread minor property damage. Loose spouting and fascia are among the first things it finds. Bracket spacing and fixing into sound timber matter more here than any sealant, so we check the fascia before new spouting goes on and replace rotten sections first.
Winter adds its own load. Christchurch averages around 80 ground frost days a year, and water left sitting in a sagging gutter or a blocked downpipe can freeze overnight. Gutters set to a proper fall drain before that happens. Streets with mature trees, in suburbs such as Riccarton and Beckenham, fill gutters quickly in autumn, and a gutter clean is often the cheapest fix for overflow. On coastal streets in New Brighton, Southshore and Sumner, salt spray shortens the life of steel, so the product and coating are matched to the site.
Steel or PVC spouting
Both materials are widely used on New Zealand homes, and both last well when installed and maintained properly. The better choice depends on the roof, the exposure and the look of the house. Steel spouting can be colour-matched to a new COLORSTEEL roof and is stiff over long runs. PVC does not rust, which can suit some exposed sites, but it moves more with temperature and needs brackets set to allow for that.
- Steel: colour-matched to the roof, rigid, a range of profiles including quarter round and box
- PVC: light, rust-free, easy to repair in sections, needs room for expansion
- Either: sized to the roof, fixed into sound fascia, with outlets placed for the downpipes
Internal and box gutters
Internal gutters sit inside the line of the walls, often behind a parapet or between two roof planes. If they overflow, the water goes straight into the building. BRANZ recommends sizing internal gutters on a higher rainfall intensity than external gutters, and good practice is to include an overflow so that a blockage spills outside. Internal gutters with too little capacity and no overflow are a known source of leaks in homes of many ages. Fixing them can mean relining in membrane or folded steel, which links to our membrane roofing work.
If your home has internal gutters and a history of unexplained ceiling stains, a roof inspection is a sensible first step before any work is quoted.
Cost and consent
Spouting is priced per metre plus fittings, but the total depends on more than length. Your itemised quote shows the material and profile, the number of corners, stopends and outlets, how many downpipes are added or replaced, any fascia repairs, access and scaffolding for two-storey sections, and removal of the old system. Bundling spouting with a re-roof shares the scaffold cost across both jobs.
Replacing spouting with a comparable product in the same position is generally covered by the Schedule 1 exemption for repair and replacement. New spouting still has to meet the Building Code, including carrying water to an approved outfall. Changing where stormwater discharges, or connecting into the public stormwater network, can bring in requirements from Christchurch City Council, Selwyn District Council or Waimakariri District Council, which we flag in the quote if they apply.
Why Choose Cheeky's Roofers for Spouting and Gutters
Sized, not copied
We check gutter and downpipe capacity against the roof area rather than replacing like with like by default.
Fixed for the wind
Brackets go into sound fascia at the right spacing, so a nor'wester does not pull the spouting away.
Overflow thinking
On internal and box gutters we plan where water goes if an outlet blocks, so it ends up outside the house.
Fascia checked as standard
We inspect the fascia behind the old spouting and quote any repair before the new system goes on.
Spouting and Gutters FAQs
How do I know if my spouting is too small?
If it overflows in heavy rain even when it is clean, it is probably undersized for the roof area or short of downpipes. We check capacity against each roof plane when we measure.
Is steel or PVC spouting better?
Neither is better everywhere. Steel colour-matches a COLORSTEEL roof and is rigid over long runs. PVC does not rust but moves more with temperature. We recommend based on your roof and exposure.
The nor'wester pulled my spouting loose. Can it be refixed?
Often, if the spouting itself is sound and the fascia behind it is solid. If brackets have torn out of rotten timber, the fascia needs repair first, and old or damaged runs are usually better replaced.
Should I replace spouting when I re-roof?
Usually yes if it is older steel or undersized. The scaffold is already up, and new spouting can be colour-matched to the new roof.
Do I need consent to replace spouting?
Generally not, if it is a comparable product in the same position. Changes to stormwater discharge or connections may bring in council requirements.
How often should spouting be cleaned?
At least once a year, and more often under trees. Clean gutters drain before water can sit and freeze, and they stop overflow staining fascia and walls.
